Napoli star striker Victor Osimhen was stretchered off in the final minutes of Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final on Friday evening.
The extent of Osimhen’s potential injury is not yet known, but it is believed that the stretcher was called for on precautionary grounds. He is expected to undergo medical examinations in the coming days and his condition will be monitored by club and country.
Osimhen had been on the receiving end of a number of tough tackles during the Angola game. He had initially received treatment on the sidelines and was briefly able to continue, but the medical team decided to call for a stretcher in the closing moments to be on the safe side.
Napoli’s leading goalscorer started up front for the Super Eagles, as he has done in every game at AFCON thus far, and played 95 minutes, including first-half injury time, before being substituted in the final minutes of the game.
Osimhen thought he had put Nigeria two goals to the good during the second half, but his strike was eventually ruled out for offside.
Nigeria have qualified for the semi-final after beating Angola 1-0, thanks to Atalanta star Ademloa Lookman’s 41st minute strike.
