Managers are always playing a dangerous game when they choose to blame the fans, and Enzo Maresca was already walking a tightrope with the support at Stamford Bridge.

They don’t like his football, they don’t like a lot of his decisions, and they don’t like what he represents – an avatar of this current ownership. When we’re winning, all is well, as we saw before Christmas when they serenaded him. But when results and performances turn as sour as they have in the last few months, they are waiting to turn on him.

In last night’s press conference Enzo made the very questionable decision to put some blame on the “environment” at Stamford Bridge for the goals his team conceded.

“I think we lost a little bit of confidence [after the first goal] because we conceded, probably because of the environment [atmosphere in the stadium] and this is the moment that you have to continue doing the right things and not change plan. We are a team which, most of the time, takes our goal kicks short. The second goal we decided to play long because of the environment, and then we conceded the second one.”

You can see the moment he decided to blame the fans in the clip embedded here:

Maresca should look closer to home before saying fans contributed to crucial goal

So the fans get nervy because we’ve got a dodgy goalkeeper, then it’s their fault that he makes a mistake and lets the other team score? How about we appoint some competent sporting directors, who sign a competent goalkeeper and appoint a competent manager. Then there would be no nerves, and no bad “environment” in the Stadium.

We’re not surprised supporters were laying into him in the first half around the press box.
