You couldn’t make it up.

Liverpool beat Wolves 3-1 on the final day of the season, but it wasn’t enough to secure the Premier League title as Manchester City came from behind against Aston Villa.

City needed to win as they went into their last game just one point ahead of Liverpool. Both sides had work to do as Wolves and Aston Villa took the lead in their games.

Sadio Mane equalised at Anfield and Villa went 2-0 up at the Etihad, so the fact that Liverpool fans spent a sizeable chunk of Sunday believing they were going to win the league definitely adds to the pain their fans are suffering this morning.

Then, a late flurry of goals saw City score three times in five minutes to go 3-2 up.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, fake news that Villa had equalised spread around Anfield as Mohamed Salah made it 2-1 in Liverpool’s favour. This sparked a scene of jubilation inside the ground, but the realisation quickly hit home and dreams of an unprecedented quadruple were washed away.

It makes me wonder how many times Gerrard is going to slip up and cost Liverpool the league title in his career.
