Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has given an update on his condition following the side’s FA Cup triumph against Manchester City on Saturday.

United beat their cross-town rivals 2-1 at Wembley to claim the trophy and end what has been an underwhelming season on a relatively high note.

The team’s goals were grabbed by Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

While he did not get on the score sheet, Martinez was a huge reason behind the success United experienced against Pep Guardiola’s men.

The Argentine was a rock at the back as he slotted next to Raphael Varane. The pair had an answer for most of the questions asked of them as they kept the City attackers at bay and nullified whatever little threat they had.

Martinez’s passing out from the back – as is usually the case -was exquisite and helped the Red Devils advance the ball higher up the pitch.

After the final whistle, Guardiola branded him as the difference-maker for United before saying he’s among the top five centre-backs in world football.

Martinez spoke to Andy Mitten and opened up on a number of topics, including his fitness.

The World Cup winner was forced to come off in the 73rd minute with what seemed like another injury. He was unable to continue and had to be replaced by Jonny Evans.

Understandably, Martinez’s substitution sparked concerns across the fanbase that he had sustained yet another physical setback but according to the player himself, it was just cramps and nothing serious.

He told Mitten, “For me it was a really tough season because of my injuries. It’s all new for me. I’ve never been [so injured before]…in the foot, in the knee, in the calf as well. I was like ‘Is this a dream or what’. I’m really strong mentally and physically.”

“Today, for sure because I only played against Newcastle, Brighton and now the final…I felt cramps in my leg and so I couldn’t finish the game. That’s why I was unhappy but I knew I had my teammates behind me and they gave everything.”

Martinez heaped praise on United’s youngsters including Mainoo, and his fellow countryman Garnacho.

“They deserve it [the praise]. For sure we need to show them the way, how to do it…because it’s difficult for them, for their age to control [themselves] because they become famous and this kind of thing. It’s really important to show them and to teach them how to act in a good way. So now, keep control. Celebrate well but maintain control.”

The 26-year-old also had kind things to say about United’s brilliant supporters. When asked how they compare to fans back home in Argentina, Martinez remarked, “I can’t describe these people [United fans]. They’re unbelievable. If you take their energy from today and the past few games this season and last season, it’s difficult to lose.”

“I can’t describe it. They have a different energy from the rest and even when we’ve lost terribly this season, they still support us…like against Crystal Palace I was so proud and today we thought about them and said we have to do it because of them, because of our fans. They’ve been unbelievable all season and all year.”

Martinez rounded off his interview by chanting “We’ve seen it all, we’ve won the lot, we’re Man United and we’re never gonna stop.”
