Jurgen Klopp says that his opinion has not changed on proposals for a European Super League after his club Liverpool announced plans to breakaway into a new competition.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have joined three clubs from Spain and three from Italy as founding members of a new midweek ‘Super League’.

The news has shook English football to its core, and many had been eagerly anticipating the thoughts of Liverpool boss Klopp, who has previously expressed that he is completely against the idea.

“I hope this Super League will never happen,” Klopp said in 2019, as quoted by The Athletic writer James Pearce.

“With the way the CL is now running, football has a great product, even with the Europa League.

“For me, the Champions League is the Super League, in which you do not always end up playing against the same teams.”

Without completely condemning the abhorrent plans, Klopp said in his pre-match interview ahead of Monday Night Football against Leeds that he enjoys competition in the sport.

He likes the idea of sides like West Ham having the chance to be able to compete in the Champions League.

Klopp reiterated the most important part of football is the players and the teams, and says he understands the frustration and anger fans across football are feeling right now.

Competition will ultimately dead if these plans are pushed through by 12 self-interested greedy owners, with clubs becoming franchises with no jeopardy or warranted success.
