Jose Mourinho has added fuel to the fire of next weekend’s Premier League clash between Manchester United and Tottenham by responding to a tongue-in-cheek joke made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer joked in the aftermath of United’s dramatic victory over Brighton that Mourinho was not in the opposition dugout to check the goalposts after the home side struck the woodwork five times.

Spurs boss Mourinho demanded a change in goalposts shortly before kick-off in Thursday night’s Europa League tie against Shkendija in Macedonia.

The goal dimensions were 5cm less than they should have been and Mourinho forced a change after consulting a UEFA delegate.

“First of all you have to be happy that Jose is not here to measure the goal posts – it might have been a smaller goal,” Solskjaer quipped in a post-match interview, as quoted by the Metro.

Mourinho was asked by a Sky Sports reporter if he had checked the goalposts ahead of Tottenham’s game against Newcastle and used the opportunity to have a dig at Solskjaer.

The ex-United boss said the ‘dimensions of the 18-yard box’ are most important for Solskjaer and he would prefer a 22-yard box, a comment clearly made in relation to the amount of penalties the Reds have been rewarded in recent months.

Solskjaer’s tongue-in-cheek joke has elicited a classic Mourinho jibe which makes next Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford between the two clubs all the more exciting.
