Jose Mourinho remains the last Manchester United manager to win silverware at the club, with the 2017 Europa League victory being the club’s most recent major honour.

That was also the highlight of Mourinho’s two-and-a-half-year stay at Old Trafford, with the Portuguese boss being sacked just months after signing his second contract.

Since then, Mourinho has struggled to replicate the heights he reached in the 2000s and early 2010s but he’s steadily making a return to Europe’s elite.

Prior to securing AS Roma’s first-ever European honour, Mourinho was quizzed on his connection to English football and elaborated on how he was unhappy to be ‘right’ about his assessment of Manchester United.

“Of course, my English connection is Chelsea. That’s the way I’m seen, a Chelsea man. Two periods at Chelsea, six years. But Man United, the fans are special,” he told BT Sport, as seen above.

“There are lots of good people inside the club so it’s not like I’m happy to be right. I’m not happy to be right, I’d like to be wrong. But I knew that I was right.

“The first thing you have to change when things are not going right is mentality and organisation. And (it) was not coming, and I knew, for me to leave, was not going to resolve the situation. I knew that, unfortunately.

“I wish them the best, honestly, and hopefully they make it.”

Mourinho has been highly critical of Manchester United since his departure in 2018 and although some would be reluctant to admit it, United’s failure to recover from his poor stint in charge has justified his comments.
