Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher claims Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to leave Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Allan on the bench was a reason behind Everton’s success at Anfield.

Carragher says Ancelotti was able to take the emotion out of the game by opting against starting two of his key men, despite the pressures of a derby game, as they were both coming back from injuries. He adds that Roberto Martinez once told him that he played Gareth Barry in a derby match against Liverpool whilst he was not 100% fit and it ended up costing him the game and ruling him out for their FA Cup semi-final that year.

Ancelotti went the other way and rejected the temptation to start his top goalscorer and it paid off for him as Richarlison handed Everton the lead early on. Everton were then able to sit deep and defend Liverpool’s waves of attacks before bringing Calvert-Lewin on in the second-half, with the striker able to win the penalty for the second – killer – goal.

Football Daily shared the clip on Twitter, with Carragher speaking on Monday Night Football about how Ancelotti was able to get the better of Jurgen Klopp at the weekend.
