England had the opportunity to qualify for the round of 16 in this winter’s World Cup but their 0-0 draw with the USA means that Gareth Southgate’s men will have to wait for the final group game against Wales.

The Three Lions are still in good stead to qualify, with even a 3-0 defeat to Wales seeing them secure passage to the next round.

In the sombre 90-minute affair in Qatar, Harry Maguire was one of the standout performers and the United captain was reserved for praise by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Speaking after the game, Maguire delivered his reaction to the game after making his 50th appearance for England, having made his debut in 2017.

“Wasn’t at our best,” Maguire told ITV when asked to summarise the performance, as seen above. “But in the end, I think it’s a point, it puts us in a strong position in the group.

“Games are never easy and we know, coming into the game, they’re a good team. We’ve watched lots of them in previous matches and they’re a good team, they play at a big tempo.

“We had to work hard out there and we could’ve maybe knicked it at the end. I mean, they had a couple of chances but we could’ve been a little more clinical with our chances and we’d probably have won the game.

“There were some positive parts and we’ll take the positive parts and we’ll work on the parts we need to improve on.”

Maguire has started both of England’s games in the World Cup and the 29-year-old is expected to start again next week when England’s fate is decided against Wales.
