Liverpool have suffered a number of injuries this season. Defenders Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold are currently all on the sidelines.

With that being the case, former Red Steve Nicol was asked on ESPNFC if he could see Liverpool making a move for Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos come January.

It has been reported that Ramos is close to leaving Real Madrid.

Nicol said (05:17) that he would rather see the club sign RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano because he is only 22 years of age.

Ramos is 34 years old, which means that he is currently at the backend of his career.

We agree with Nicol. The club would be better off signing a player who has 10 or so years left in professional football.

Van Dijk is currently 29 years old. With that being the case, it would make sense for Liverpool to think about the future. The Dutchman won’t be around forever.

There has been no news to suggest that Liverpool have any interest in Ramos, but the Reds have been linked with Upamecano.

With that being the case, it sounds like Liverpool are thinking about the future.
