Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has rejected the idea that Leicester could have been given a penalty against Liverpool on Sunday.

Gallagher was asked about an incident involving Liverpool defender Joel Matip, as his hand struck the ball inside the box after James Maddison attempted to flick it on.

The former referee says that it was the right decision not to award a penalty to the away side, as Matip’s arms were by his side and – therefore – not in an unnatural position.

Sky Sports News posted the clip on Twitter, as the panel discussed refereeing decisions from the weekend.

The presenter does mention that Gallagher’s logic undermines what he said in the Manchester United and West Brom game, when a penalty was given for handball against Darnell Furlong. Gallagher failed to respond with an explanation on why the two are different, saying that it is just how refereeing is.
