Bruno Fernandes admits Manchester United were far from at their best in the unconvincing 1-0 victory over West Brom at Old Trafford.

But the Portuguese match-winner stressed the value of the three points as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men leapfrogged Man City with their first home win of the season.

Fernandes was involved in each of the key moments in the game, first giving away a penalty for a coming together with Baggies midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The penalty decision was overturned by referee David Coote after he was advised to check his pitch side monitor by VAR, but the call has split opinion on social media with many believing the penalty should have stood.

Just minutes later, Fernandes capitalised on the away side’s misfortune with a retaken penalty after a clear handball.

Fernandes’ first spot-kick was saved by man-of-the-match Sam Johnstone but the ex-Red ‘keeper was clearly off his line and no mistake was made second time round.

The performance from Solskjaer’s men will do little to breed much confidence, but the victory was crucial heading into a defining period for the Reds.

United take on Istanbul Basaksehir as Champions League football returns on Tuesday before a trip to highflying Southampton in the league next Sunday.
