England have been given a huge boost as Harry Maguire has returned to training with the squad. The centre-back has been a doubt for the tournament since suffering ankle ligament damage last month, but has been pictured in squad training ahead of Sunday’s game against Croatia.

Maguire is unlikely to feature in England’s first game but after returning to training, there is optimism among supporters that Southgate’s most trusted defender will be available for selection at some point.

The 28-year-old can be seen moving freely and is seemingly ready to help his nation in their hunt of silverware. The former Leicester and Hull player was a mainstay in Southgate’s 2018 World Cup team, scoring in the quarter-final’s of the competition.

The England manager has reportedly been experimenting in training to find the best possible solution, should Maguire not be fit, which included trials of Luke Shaw at centre-back.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be hoping that Maguire is not rushed back to action and is instead given the appropriate amount of time to recover. Ligament damage injuries are notoriously difficult to overcome and the United’s Norwegian boss will be counting on his captain to return for pre-season in good shape.
