Simon Jordan does not understand why Ed Woodward hasn’t appointed a director of football at Manchester United.

Woodward, executive vice-chairman, has displayed consistent ineptitude in making on-field decisions relating to player transfers and managerial appointments since taking over from David Gill as the club’s main operator in 2013.

But, quite remarkably, he seemingly refuses to give up any power over football-related decisions at Old Trafford which has set United back a number of years in their pursuit of domestic success.

This summer’s haphazard transfer window that included four signings on a hectic deadline day highlighted a desultory recruitment structure that could easily be improved by a figurehead with an understanding of footballing operations.

Jordan, former chairman of Crystal Palace, believes the appointment of a director of football would make perfect sense as it would relieve some of the pressure and abuse targeted at Woodward.

The Sun have reported Everton’s transfer chief Marcel Brands is the leading candidate to become the club’s first director of football should United eventually fill the role.

TalkSPORT pundit Jordan has weighed in on the Brands link, suggesting his ambitious project on Merseyside may be just as appealing as a job at United for the 58-year-old.
