Barcelona found themselves in the midst of fierce criticism earlier in the summer when they refused to retain the services of Dani Alves.
The club legend had a contract until the end of the 2021/22 season, but Barça had the option to extend his deal at least until the end of the year.
But the club opted to let him leave – a move that did not sit well with many of the fans, especially as the player was not given a farewell despite years of service.
However, ahead of the Joan Gamper trophy clash against Pumas UNAM, it appears Alves has been given a proper goodbye by Barcelona, in front of a packed Camp Nou stadium.
The veteran defender received a standing ovation from the Barcelona fans, while he was greeted by many of his former Barça teammates including Sergio Busquets, who also held a jersey with his name on the back.
Alves was handed a piece of silverware by club president Joan Laporta as well, for all his service to the club over the years.
It was an emotional moment for Dani Alves, who will have to set aside his feelings for the next hour or so as Barcelona and Pumas UNAM lock horns in the Joan Gamper trophy.
