Barcelona took a huge step towards winning the league after a thrilling 4-3 win over Real Madrid in a high-pressure Clasico.

With only three matches left to play, the Catalan giants now sit seven points clear of Carlo Ancelotti’s side, putting one hand firmly on the trophy.

The match was packed with emotion and intensity. Kylian Mbappe got Real Madrid off to a flying start with two quick goals. But Barça showed great fight and spirit, turning things around with a stunning comeback.

Every goal, every moment had fans on the edge of their seats. However, as often happens in Clasicos, the game was not without controversy. A key moment came when Ferran Torres took a shot that appeared to strike Aurelien Tchouameni’s hand inside the Madrid box.

Referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez went to the VAR monitor to check the incident. Despite clear images, he chose not to give a penalty, leaving Barcelona fans furious.

Controversial VAR audio raises eyebrows

Another major talking point was the goal scored by Fermin Lopez deep into stoppage time. The strike would have made it 5-3 for Barcelona, sealing the win in style. But after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for a handball by Fermin.

The VAR audio from that moment has caused a stir. During the review, a voice in the VAR room was heard saying, “Thank goodness,” which many fans found strange.

The comment came while Hernandez Hernandez was watching the replays at the request of Juan Martinez Munuera.

Martinez Munuera : “Listen to me, Alex. We just detected a hand, okay? Come see it, please.”

An unknown voice: “With the height, thank goodness. Yes, yes, absolutely.”

Hernandez Hernandez : “Okay, perfect. Go ahead, it hits his hand, yes. The ball is going to go out and now give me a wide one so I can see the whole action, see how it ends. Okay, perfect, the hand is clearly up. I’m going to cancel the goal.”

The full conversation revealed how the decision was made, but the “thank goodness” line was not included in the official subtitles released by the RFEF.

This has raised fresh questions about transparency and consistency in the use of VAR. For Barcelona, the result stands, and their focus now turns to wrapping up the title, with just three games between them and glory.
