The big players step up in the big moments and Alisson Becker stepped up to do what no other goalkeeper has done for Liverpool before him – score a goal, and a last-gasp one at that.

It was virtually the last action of the game and Liverpool needed to score to keep their hopes of Champions League football kicking. Trent Alexander-Arnold whips the corner in and you could be forgiven for expecting Gini Wijnaldum, Nat Phillips or Roberto Firmino to get on the end of it with their head. Instead, Alisson positions himself well and produced a simply stupendous effort to turn his neck and generate enough power to lever it into the far corner to win the match.

Not only has Alisson become the first Liverpool goalkeeper to ever score a competitive goal, but he is now also the only goalkeeper in Premier League history to score a header. He is the sixth shot-stopper to score a Premier League goal, with the previous five all coming with their feet.

Alisson rose like a salmon to get on the end of Alexander-Arnold’s cross and the difficulty to then direct it into the far corner past the goalkeeper should not be underestimated. The Brazilian did not pop up with a scrappy free-for-all winner at the end, he scored a peach of a header that a striker could be proud of.

Liverpool’s official Twitter account shared the goal on Twitter, with an almost endless set of different angles for Alisson’s last-gasp winner.
