Neil Lennon has defended his players after another 4-1 thrashing from Sparta Prague sent the top seeds in Group H crashing out of the Europa League. Shambolic defending and facial, almost comical goalkeeping from Scott Bain – looking every bit the third pick keeper he was last year meant that Odsonne Edouard’s stunning opener counted for very little.

As usual John Kennedy sat in his usual huff on the bench while Gavin Strachan tried to figure out how to switch on the iPad he was given when he arrived from Peterborough, preferred to the former Celtic striker Henrik Larsson, who went to. Barcelona instead.

Here’s the manager’s take on the latest instalment of the 8-2 aggregate defeat to Sparta Prague.

“I didn’t think we deserved to lose 4-1…. after half time for 35 minutes we were superb. Things aren’t going for us at the minute. It was far better than the performance two weeks ago.

“I’ve been in situations like this before as a manager and player. There is no reason for me to believe we won’t turn this around.”

“We are bitterly disappointed with the run we are on but we feel we have the minerals to turn it around.”
