Victor Orta could fix his biggest Leeds United transfer howler by signing Derby County starlet Louie Sibley amid their financial problems.

What’s the story?

Reports back in the January transfer window had claimed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side had joined the chase to sign Sibley, but a deal failed to materialise before the deadline.

Now, amid the turmoil currently surrounding the Rams – they officially entered into administration last week – former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has suggested that Leeds have been handed the perfect chance to finally land the 20-year-old.

He said: “There is an opportunity now for clubs to sign the good players Derby have got for next to nothing. There will probably be some daft offers going in. Derby will need the money unless they find a buyer by then.

“It’s another opportunity for Leeds to sign Louie Sibley. I know very well and let me tell you he’d be a brilliant signing for them.”

Orta’s biggest Leeds howler

While the injury crisis that Bielsa’s side is currently facing is hardly something the club could have imagined, it surely doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the Whites desperately needed reinforcements in the middle of the park.

All summer there was talk of the club potentially going after Uruguay international Nahitan Nandez, while Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien also emerged as a transfer target too.

In the end, neither arrived, and Leeds instead put their faith in their current crop of options and desperately hoping Adam Forshaw’s return to fitness would ease their lack of new signings in that area.

Instead, the Whites have suffered a horror start to the new Premier League campaign that has seen them firmly rooted to the bottom three without a win, and Forshaw now being set for an extended period on the side-lines following yet another injury.

Orta can however fix that massive blunder by making a fresh move for Sibley, and it’s something former Leeds man Carlton Palmer has previously thrown his backing behind when speaking exclusively to FFC.

He said: “Well, in terms of the way Leeds play, he definitely fits into their system. I think Bielsa will look to youth, but you’ve also got to get experienced players as well. Now, once you’ve done that first season, as you’ve seen with Sheffield United, you’ve got to get that balance between youth and experience.

“He’d be a great signing for the future and I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him. Leeds would take him for the future, but they also need proven quality now to take them to the next level.”

And, speaking after a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, former Derby boss, Philip Cocu, declared: “He played a great game. He’s a great character — he has a good mentality, he has the desire to win, to play, to find his positioning between the lines. He’s not scared of anybody. It was a pleasure to see him play.”

Able to play as a number ten, or even deeper, Sibley’s got the versatility to really be a perfect fit for whatever system and tactic Bielsa chooses to employ at Elland Road.

Orta can right his biggest Leeds wrong by finally signing the 20-year-old.
