When Bayer Leverkusen dethroned Bayern Munich to lift their maiden Bundesliga title, Victor Boniface was instrumental in Die Werkself’s success.

Having registered 14 goals and eight assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances, the Nigerian international was one of the most feared strikers in Europe.

However, since returning from an adductor injury—suffered during Leverkusen’s title-winning season—Boniface and Leverkusen have not been the same.

With just ten goal contributions last season, it has been made clear that the 24-year-old would be allowed to depart the BayArena.

A move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr in January broke down, but with Patrik Schick set to stay at Leverkusen this summer, an exit for Boniface appeared to remain open.

Regardless, the Nigerian international could now remain at Die Werkself, with Erik ten Hag looking to utilise Boniface and Schick as a front two, as reported by Bild.

The former Manchester United head coach has outlined his desire to use Boniface just behind Schick over the course of pre-season, despite the pair rarely featuring together under Xabi Alonso.

Should they strike up an effective partnership, then it is expected that Boniface will stay.

Nevertheless, should the plan fail, then a departure before the end of the transfer window could be an option, with AC Milan still targeting the €50 million marksman.
