River Plate vice-president Jorge Brito has revealed that the club plan to try and renew the contract of Julian Alvarez amid links with AC Milan and other clubs.

Alvarez is beginning to attract a lot of attention after the 2021 season he has had with River Plate, who have won their league. He has 21 goals and 13 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for the Buenos Aires club, so it is no surprise to hear that clubs are queueing up to sign him.

Nicolo Schira reported yesterday for example that there are as many as 14 European clubs who are not only interested in Alvarez but have sent their scouts to monitor his progress: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona from Spain, Aston Villa, Norwich City, Tottenham and Newcastle from England, Milan, Fiorentina, Inter and Juventus from Italy plus Ajax, Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayer Leverkusen.

Alvarez’s contract expires on December 31, 2022 but there is hope on the part of River Plate that they will be able to continue beyond then, as the vice president of the Argentine side Jorge Brito revealed to Ole Sports.

“We believe that Julián still has a lot to give to the club, we want to renew Julián’s contract. Then we are aware of the moment he is going through and that beyond the fact that there has not been a specific offer, he is a player that is liked by the main clubs in the world, and in this regard we have always been very aware that contracts must be respected. Julián has a release clause that we cannot avoid,” he said (via MilanLive).
