VfB Stuttgart are in danger of missing out on European football next season, and it’s starting to cause internal concern.

As reported by Kicker, VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth does not mix his words, “We are lagging behind demands.”

The comments were made following Stuttgart’s 1-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday evening. The loss means that Stuttgart are now without a win in six Bundesliga matches and currently sit in 11th, five points from 6th.

Just ten days ago, there was jubilation at the club when head coach Sebastian Hoeneß extended his contract beyond this season following interest from several clubs.

However, now six games without a victory, the picture at Stuttgart is starting to look less hopeful and more grim. Europe is no longer a guarantee, with several teams chasing 6th spot, including Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart are going to have to turn their fortunes around rather quickly.

Wohlgemuth only spoke to the cameras briefly on Saturday evening and was to the point.

“My smile is only put on,” explained the sports director.

When asked what it means that Deniz Undav was again not in the starting XI, Wohlgemuth simply said: “It suggests that he did not offer himself in training for the first eleven.”

Clearly frustrated, it gives a slight indication of the internal picture at Stuttgart.

It’s clear that players haven’t been performing to the best of their abilities, and this has negative effects both on and off the pitch.

VfB have the opportunity to spread some cheer in midweek when they host RB Leipzig in the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal. This is also a great opportunity for Stuttgart to get European football next season.

After that, Stuttgart plays Bochum in the Bundesliga, another fantastic chance to get a much-needed win. If they fail again for another week, expect more open and emotional comments from the club.
