The likes of Paolo Maldini, Claudio Pizzaro and Zé Roberto all continued their top level careers after turning 40.

None of them can touch Kazuyoshi Miura who is still playing competitive matches – having turned 53 in February.

After featuring for Yokohama FC on Wednesday evening, Miura has now played competitive football in five(!) different decades.

  1. 1980s
  2. 1990s
  3. 2000s
  4. 2010s
  5. 2020s

King Kazu is recognised by Guinness World Records as both the oldest player and the oldest goalscorer in professional football history – taking both records from the legendary Sir Stanley Matthews – who hung up his boots at 50.

Just to put his age into context, Miura was born in February 1967 – seven months after England won the 1966 FIFA World Cup.

So the prophecy rings true. Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.
