After two embarrassing matches where they failed to score, Veracruz tallied a 93rd-minute goal to earn their first point of the season.

It seemed as if Monarcas were destined to win their second match of the young season.

Ray Sandoval’s ninth-minute rocket into the top corner will surely be a candidate for Liga MX goal of the week.

Just as Monarcas seemed to be in control of the match, the Sharks tied the vibrant encounter in the 38th minute through Hilbert Ruíz for the club’s first goal of the season.

The two sides would engage in a back-and-forth affair the entire second half, but Monarcas looked as if they stole the match in the 91st minute. They caught Veracruz out on the counterattack and Roberto Hernández Ayala finished off the excellent move to put Morelia up 2-1 late.

However, a little bit of luck would allow Veracruz to earn their first point of the season. Joe Abrigo’s ambitious effort took a heavy deflection on its way to goal and looped over the goalkeeper’s head to send the fans home with a smile on their face.

Monarcas are now 1-1-1 after three matches, while Veracruz escaped the bottom of the table. Only Chivas, Pachuca, and Léon have yet to pick up a result.
