São Paulo failed to take advantage of a huge opportunity to move into the top-four, as Vasco squeaked out a 2-0 victory at home on Thursday night.

In a match devoid of many scoring chances, Andrey’s early 18th-minute goal set the tone before Yago Pikachu sealed the win deep into stoppage time.

SPFC, who have already clinched a top-six berth and a place in the Libertadores second stage, could have moved into fourth place with a result after Grêmio lost 2-0 at Flamengo on Wednesday.

Instead, they remain in fifth place on 62 points as Vasco got their biggest win of the season.

Against the run of play, Andrey cleverly stole the ball from his opponent and struck a hard shot into the bottom corner out of the reach of goalkeeper Jean to give Vasco a shock lead.

Vasco’s defence was compact and did well to allow just two shots on goal despite conceding 65 per cent possession to their opponents.

In the final moments of the match, Yago Pikachu and Maxi López combined on a beautiful piece of interplay that Pikachu finished off to give Vasco all three points.

With the win, Vasco may have secured their survival as they moved into 14th place on 42 points, four points above 17th-placed Sport Recife.
