Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick as Leicester City inflicted an emphatic 5-2 win on Manchester City.

The win pushed Brendan Rodgers' side to the top of the Premier League after three rounds.

Riyad Mahrez put the hosts ahead with a stunning volley after four minutes, but the Foxes responded in superb fashion.

It was Vardy who levelled things from the penalty spot before the break after he was fouled by Kyle Walker.

New signing Timothy Castagne sent in a low cross for Vardy at the front post, and the veteran forward delivered a world-class flick to deceive Ederson in the City goal.

Vardy was again fouled in the box, this time by Eric Garcia, which allowed him to fire home his hat-trick with 58 minutes played.

James Maddison then made 4-1 with a stunning long-range strike into the top corner.

Nathan Ake gave City a flicker of hope with an 84th minute header but it was quickly extinguished as Youri Tielemans converted another spot-kick to restore the three goal advantage.

It was City's biggest home defeat in 17 years but Pep Guardiola refused to criticise his players after the game.

Asked what he told his players, he replied: "How good they are, how good a team they are, how good players they are.

"They know exactly the defeat is painful but we have to start again."
