A major DFL/DFB announcement concerning a Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga pilot project reported upon yesterday took place today. Those turning into German football will soon have a chance to watch match officials communicate refereeing decisions directly to the crowd. The two administrative bodies responsible for administering Germany’s top two footballing flights confirmed many details today.
All told, nine clubs will participate in the pilot project. Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, SC Freiburg, FC St. Pauli and RB Leipzig have agreed to mic-up officials at home games before the season is out. Two second tier clubs, Fortuna Düsseldorf and SpVgg Greuther Fürth, have agreed to as well.
Refs will speak over stadium PAs in the following matches this weekend:
Bundesliga:
Bayern vs. Kiel
St. Pauli vs. Augsburg
Frankfurt vs. Wolfsburg
Leverkusen vs. Hoffenheim
2. Bundesliga:
Düsseldorf vs. Ulm
The referee will turn to face the main stand and activate his headset for transmission to the stadium loudspeakers using the “push-to-talk button” on his equipment. The referee will then inform the spectators which match action was reviewed, what the result of the review was, and what the final decision is.
“Our goal is to provide more transparency for decisions related to the VAR,” Bayern sporting director and DFL commission member Max Eberl stated at today’s press conference. “Above all, the spectators in the stadiums should have added value. We think that the public announcement can be a step forward in further improving the VAR system.”
