Tottenham Hotspur had two goals disallowed by the video assistant referee (VAR) inside the first 30 minutes of their FA Cup replay with Rochdale on Wednesday evening.

Érik Lamela thought he’d given Spurs the lead after six minutes only for his strike to be mysteriously ruled out by the video referee.

Son Heung-min did then open the scoring…

…and would have made it 2-0 moments later were his penalty not disallowed for “illegal feinting” in his run up.

That’s a new one to us, we must admit, and to add insult to injury, Rochdale then grabbed an equaliser in the 31st minute.

Stephen Humphrys’ goal to draw the League One side level ended a run of 500 minutes for Tottenham without conceding at Wembley.

But Fernando Llorente re-established the Lilywhites’ lead after the break with a delightful lobbed finish over goalkeeper Josh Lillis.

And the Spaniard then made it 3-1 when he finished off Lucas Moura’s pull back from close range in the 53rd minute.

Before completing a 12-minute hat-trick to effectively end the game as a contest.

And if there were any doubt about Spurs’ progression to the quarter-final, it was extinguished when Son grabbed his second of the game to make it 5-1.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side then unequivocally wrapped things up in the dying minutes when Kyle Walker-Peters made it six.

The FA Cup is many things, but dull is not one of them.
