Vancouver Whitecaps are seeking to sign Thomas Müller and bring him to MLS, according to reports from Tom Bogert and Ben Jacobs.
The Canadian MLS club are currently in discussions with FC Cincinnati to buy the players’ discovery rights. This will then allow the Whitecaps to start negotiations with Müller.
The Whitecaps are planning to offer the Bayern Munich legend a contract until 2026, but FC Cincinnati are currently demanding a high sum for the sale of the discovery rights.
Before any talks with Müller, the Whitecaps will need these rights.
For some time, LAFC were considered the favourites to sign Müller as they’re the partner club to Bayern.
However, the Canadian-based club are now truly in the poker.
In MLS, discovery rights allow clubs to register up to seven players who aren’t currently playing in the league. The rights give them exclusive negotiating rights, meaning no other clubs can come in a steal any potential deal. The rule is in place to try to stop overspending on talents outside the league.
In this case, Cincinnati currently holds the rights, meaning the Whitecaps must first go to them before getting the chance to sign Müller.
