“You’re not having him in the XI are you?” Neville responds.

Not even in the first 20. He’ll be in the stands,” Van Dijk brutally responded.

Neville, obviously, loved Van Dijk’s reply as he burst out laughing.

“You mean that as well, don’t you?” Neville adds.

“Yeah,” Van Dijk replied.

Brutal.

However, Carragher just had to reply.

All he needed was the sunglasses emoji along with a graphic showing goalkeepers with the most clean sheets for Liverpool in their first 200 appearances for the club. It shows Pepe Reina with 102 clean sheets compared to Alisson’s 90.

Carragher thinks that proves a point…

Carragher played 737 times for his boyhood Liverpool but failed to lift the Premier League trophy with them – something that Van Dijk has achieved during his career on Merseyside.

The Dutchman’s performances at Liverpool have come under criticism so far this season. However, former Premier League boss, Neil Warnock, believes it’s only a matter of time before he’s back to his very best.

Neil Warnock backs Van Dijk to bounce back

“The time to judge will be at the end of the season, but he has to adjust,” Warnock admitted.

“Some of the mistakes they’ve made. Basic things really, the best centre-half in the country has hit a bad spell. Van Dijk has hit a bad spell. Whereas he’s been able to lift everyone around him, he looks like he has enough on his plate to lift himself, but that will come back, with good players that comes back.”

Liverpool are currently sitting ninth in the Premier League with four wins, four draws and four defeats from their 12 league games. It leaves them eight points adrift of Newcastle, who occupy fourth place.

However, after beating Napoli 2-0 on Tuesday, the Reds are through to the last 16 of the Champions League and will be looking to go one better than last year where they suffered final heartbreak against Real Madrid.

The entire Liverpool squad – not just Van Dijk – will need to improve after the World Cup if they want to overcome some of Europe’s finest clubs including Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

But you certainly wouldn’t bet against it…
