Aymeric Laporte did not appear to be impressed when the PFA Team of the Year was revealed on Thursday.
The team, voted for by footballers in England’s top tier, featured just three Manchester City players.
None of Laporte, Ruben Dias or John Stones made the side at centre-back.
Laporte took to social media to send a series of posts following his omission.
The Spaniard began by posting a number of stat charts that he topped in the 2021/22 season. Those were completed passes (2767), passing accuracy (94.8%), most last-man tackles (three) and mist goals from a centre-back (four).
The following morning, Laporte than posted a GIF of Jose Mourinho’s famous interview where he said: ‘If I speak I am trouble. Big, big trouble’.
Laporte accompanied the GIF with a facepalming and a shrugging emoji.
So, did Laporte deserve to make the side? According to statistics, he didn’t.
WhoScored.com gave him a rating of 6.91/10 for the 2021/22 season. That puts him 10th among centre-backs in England’s top tier.
View the 20 best centre-backs in the Premier League in 21/22, per stats provided by WhoScored, below…

So, according to stats, Laporte has a case that he had a better season than Chelsea’s Rudiger.
But there were players more deserving than him in making the Team of the Year, including Brentford’s Pinnock and Burnley’s Tarkowski.
