Liverpool’s Europa League journey ended with a whimper as they crashed out of the tournament despite sealing a 1-0 win in the second leg in Bergamo this evening.

Mohamed Salah’s early penalty sparked dreams of a comeback, but Atalanta worked hard to ensure they did not concede more.

They limited the Merseysiders to an xG of 0.04 in the second half, and the match ended 3-1 on aggregate.

Liverpool have not scored an open-play goal in the last 300+ minutes of football. They have lost ground in the Premier League and been knocked out of the Europa League.

However, captain Virgil Van Dijk has asked fans not to despair but rather rally around the team to push them for the final six league games.

The Reds have matches against Everton, Fulham, Aston Villa, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers over the next few weeks.

“Credit to Atalanta, last week, the damage was done,” said the Dutch international defender (via TNT Sports).

“Everyone feels disappointed. I feel disappointed, but we don’t have a lot of time to be disappointed.”

“We need our fans more than ever for the last six games of the season, where anything is possible.”

Liverpool recently drew against Manchester United before following it with another poor result at home to Crystal Palace.

The results allowed Arsenal and Manchester City to overtake the Reds in the title race, and they will need a helping hand to overhaul their rivals.
