The 33-year-old said (via The Athletic), “I can say obviously discussions are ongoing, but I don’t know – we will see what happens in the future.

“My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else. What the future will bring, I have no idea at the moment.”

Van Dijk’s performances this season have helped Liverpool to the top of the Premier League with just three goals conceded in eight matches.

The Reds have also won their first two Champions League games, positioning themselves well.

His most recent display came in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chelsea, where he showcased his defensive prowess and leadership.

The centre-back was impeccable, winning all his ground and aerial duels, completing 54 of 63 passes for an impressive accuracy of 86%, and contributing with four clearances, one tackle and an interception.

As a cornerstone of manager Arne Slot’s strategy, Van Dijk has started every Premier League match this season, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s elite defenders.

Liverpool fans will be hopeful that Hughes can finalise a contract extension, as Van Dijk’s experience and skill remain crucial to the club’s ambitions this season.

With discussions confirmed and the season in full swing, the next few weeks could be pivotal for both the player and the club as they look to secure a bright future together.

The former Southampton defender still has plenty to give, and they must give him what wants to keep him around.
