Former Holland striker Rene van der Gijp doesn't believe Donny van de Beek is good enough for Manchester United.

Van de Beek has struggled for minutes this season after being blocked from a loan move to Everton on transfer deadline day. He was left on the bench for United's Champions League victory over Villarreal and also their draw with the Toffees on Saturday.

And former PSV Eindhoven striker Van der Gijp admits he can understand United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not going with Van de Beek with so many midfield options available to him.

Quoted by Voetbalzone, Van der Gijp said on Veronica Inside: "We know Van de Beek, so we know what his limitations are.

"Maybe they expect something different at Manchester United. They've had midfielders, haven't they? Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Paul Pogba, go on and on. And then comes Van de Beek, which is less. He has some good qualities, like scoring a goal in the box."

Fellow pundit Jan Boskamp, the former Stoke City manager, also said: “He could go to Everton, they stopped him. He could have played football there. He is fifth or sixth choice in this midfield, isn't he?"

So far this season, Van de Beek has managed three appearances for United and been left out of the Holland squad by coach Louis van Gaal. He's only completed the one full 90 in the Carabao Cup.
