FC Twente have confirmed the arrival of Thomas van den Belt. The 23-year-old midfielder has joined from Feyenoord and has signed a four-year contract with De Grolsch Veste.
For the Tukkers, the Zwolle native is a welcome reinforcement for the midfield, since Michal Sadílek (Slavia Prague) and top scorer Sem Steijn (Feyenoord) already made respective transfers this summer. He is the first acquisition of the window for Twente, who reached an agreement with Feyenoord a few weeks ago.
Van den Belt admittedly struggled to make an impact in Rotterdam, and earned a move away following a fine loan spell in the Spanish second division.
“Last season I had a good season in Spain at Castellón, and recently FC Twente came forward again. The choice wasn’t so difficult”, Van den Belt, responded on the club website. “FC Twente are a great club and I wanted to move on quickly. That gave me confidence. I know FC Twente well. When my father worked here (as financial director), I often visited. It’s a club with a beautiful stadium and very loyal supporters. All in all, this is a very nice step.”
Technical director Jan Streuer thinks Twente will have a lot of fun with Van den Belt, who was also on the radar of the club during his time at PEC Zwolle.
“He is an all-round midfielder with both attacking and defensive qualities. Two years ago we also tried to bring Thomas to FC Twente, but he chose Feyenoord at that time. Last season we continued to follow Thomas in Spain and he showed himself excellently at Castellón, where he was one of the decisive players.”
