West Bromwich Albion boss Valerien Ismael has claimed that Millwall, Derby County and Preston North End didn’t want to play in recent meetings with his side.

It’s become a frustrating run of results for the Baggies, who have drawn three consecutive fixtures and failed to build a lead at the top of the Championship table.

Millwall, Derby and, most recently, Preston have all frustrated West Brom with their approach.

On the back of those results, Ismael has taken aim at the approach of all three sides, claiming that they didn’t want to go toe-to-toe with his side.

He told the Express and Star: “For sure we want to press but in the last three games there is no chance to press because the opponents don’t want to play.”

Despite that subtle dig at the opposition’s preference to not come onto his side, Ismael claimed it was the Baggies’ duty to overcome such tactics.

“The opponent can do anything he wants against us, we need to find the solutions,” he continued.

“The opponent is taking us into a fight and we need to have solutions for that.”

Next up for West Brom is a Friday night clash with Queens Park Rangers.

Like West Brom, the R’s have enjoyed a positive start to the season, although defeat to Bristol City at the weekend saw them drop out of the top-six.

Mark Warburton’s side, though, have collected 12 points from the opening eight games of the season.

The Verdict

It’s annoying in the Championship when a side sets up to nullify your threat. However, as Ismael mentions, the opposition can do what they like and it’s down to his side to come up with a solution.

Millwall, Derby and Preston have all taken a big point off his side and it’s a big win for them to do so.

For what it is worth, this coming weekend might be a touch different against QPR. They will take the game to West Brom and look to get the ball down and play.

Whether that plays into West Brom’s hands remains to be seen.
