Olympique de Marseille may have secured European football for next season, but stumbled against Lille OSC, losing 2-1 on Saturday.

The dropped points give RC Lens the opportunity to create a five-point lead if they win against FC Lorient Sunday. After the match, a few of the Marseille players expressed their regrets.

Despite taking an early lead, Les Phocéens ended up losing 2-1 after a Jonathan David penalty and Jonathan Bamba’s second-half strike. In an interview with Canal+, transcribed by RMC Sport, Valentin Rongier spoke about the loss stating, “This loss will undoubtedly come at a high cost.”

The French midfielder did not hold back on his feelings of where things went wrong explaining, “We came here with the intention of winning and putting pressure on Lens. Unfortunately, we fell short tonight, and as competitors, we are frustrated. We need to analyze what went wrong, but it feels like we lost control of the game, because we weren’t truly threatened in the first half.”

Despite the circumstances, Rongier remained resolute in maintaining a positive mindset as long as there was a mathematical possibility of securing second place. He also acknowledged that OM fell short of their own expectations. Marseille face Stade Brestois next week before finishing the season at AC Ajaccio.
