Carlos Soler scored a hat-trick of penalties as Valencia stunned Real Madrid on a crazy night at the Mestella.
It started routinely enough when Karim Benzema gave the visitors the lead in the 23rd minute by rifling home from just outside the penalty area after some neat play down the left flank.
However, the hosts were able to level matters in controversial circumstances 10 minutes before the break.
Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Carlos Soler’s initial penalty only for Yunus Musah to score after Soler’s rebound effort came off the post.
After a VAR review, Musah was deemed to have encroached and so a retake was ordered. Soler made no mistake at the second time of asking.
Valencia then took the lead on the stroke of half time when Madrid centre-back Raphaël Varane diverted a low cross over his own line.
Javi Gracia’s men came out hot after the break, with Kang-in Lee rattling the post before Soler converted his second spot kick of the night in the 54th minute.
And then the Valencia midfielder got yet another opportunity from 12 yards just after the hour mark following a Sergio Ramos foul on Musah.
The shock defeat leaves Zinedine Zidane’s side in fourth place in LaLiga, four points behind leaders Real Sociedad but with a game in hand.
