Valencia have announced that former player Rubén Baraja will take over as the club’s new head coach.

The 47-year-old replaces Gennaro Gattuso, who was sacked earlier this month after a poor run of form which left Valencia in the relegation zone.

Baraja is one of the most decorated players in Los Ches’ history, after he made over 260 appearances for the clubs in the 2000s winning two LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey and one UEFA Cup.

Since retiring from playing in 2010 he has held managerial positions at Elche, Rayo Vallecano, Tenerife and his last stint at Zaragoza in 2020.

Valencia sit 18th following the 2-1 defeat to Athletic Club on Saturday.
