In this exclusive interview with K League United, Valdivia, the 2023 K League 2 MVP and a key player for Jeonnam Dragons, opens up about his journey to South Korea, the challenges of living and playing abroad, and his aspirations for the future. He shares insights on the team's growth, their playoff chances, and his personal connection to the club and fans.
With Jeonnam vying for promotion after six years in the second tier, Valdivia's confidence and leadership are central to their campaign. Here's what the Brazilian playmaker had to say:
Q: As the 2023 K League 2 MVP, have you felt extra pressure to perform this year?
A: "I haven’t felt any special pressure. Last year, the disappointment of not reaching the playoffs was greater. This year, I’ve focused more on playing for the team rather than worrying about individual attacking stats."
Q: Your performances will have attracted the attention of K League 1 clubs, but you signed a new contract last year. How happy are you at Jeonnam Dragons? You must have a lot of affection for the club.
A: "Yes, absolutely. Not only me but my family is also very happy in this region. As I mentioned, last year’s disappointment still resonates with the team."
Q: How would you assess your performances this season? 12 goals and five assists is very good.
A: "Although I’ve achieved significant attacking stats, I still want to play in a way that helps the team win more effectively."
Q: How are you enjoying life in Gwangyang and in the K League in general?
A: "The Korean league is highly competitive, and I’m very satisfied playing here. My family is also enjoying life in Korea, which makes me very happy."
Q: Why Jeonnam Dragons and why K League 2? What attracted you to South Korea?
A: "I knew football was growing in Korea and thought playing here would be a great opportunity for me."
Q: What was the biggest culture shock for you?
A: "The food is very different from Brazil, so that was something new for me. Now, I only choose the Korean dishes I like."
Q: The team went to Seoul E-Land needing a win to secure a playoff spot. A 4-0 win is a real statement. Do you think teams will be scared of Jeonnam in the playoffs?
A: "Compared to last year, our team has grown a lot, and this game proved we are a strong team. We’re confident and well-prepared for the playoffs."
Q: Two goals in the last two games of the season, seven goals scored by the team, none conceded, and a draw with champions FC Anyang—how is the mood in the team right now? How confident are you as a team?
A: "I know how it feels when your toes freeze in the cold, but I’ll adapt and perform well in the playoffs. The team’s atmosphere is fantastic right now."
Q: You face Busan IPark in the first round of the playoffs. How important is the home advantage for you? You don’t need to win to progress to the next stage.
A: "Other teams aren’t the focus. We just need to play for our team. While the draw advantage is useful, we aim to maintain our strong performance and secure a win."
Q: Busan has history in the playoffs, including a painful loss to Suwon FC last year. Has the coach talked about what to expect from Busan?
A: "We always train for defensive scenarios and various attacking tactics. Our focus is solely on winning by playing our best football."
Q: If you face Seoul E-Land again, do you think that 4-0 win will give you a psychological advantage?
A: "A victory always brings a positive impact. It will influence the game against Busan, but staying focused until the end is even more important."
Q: How confident are you that Jeonnam Dragons can win promotion?
A: "I believe we are a good team and deserve promotion. We’ll achieve great results in the playoffs."
Q: Will you be with the team next season?
A: "Yes, I’m contracted with Jeonnam until 2026. I’ll give my best for the team."
Q: What message do you have for the Jeonnam Dragons fans?
A: "I’m very grateful for the constant support and will do my best to repay it with great results. Once again, thank you for everything!"
