Real Madrid held at home to Chelsea

Scorers: Weir 36′; Misa (OG) 58′

Real Madrid were held at home as Caroline Weir’s long-range effort was cancelled out by a bizarre penalty spot effort.

Chelsea began in the ascendency as Sam Kerr inexplicably struck the crossbar from close range within the first two minutes of the game.

The visitors had the better of the ball and the chances for most of the first period, whilst Real Madrid grew quietly into the game before they were gifted an opening goal.

Attempting to play out of the back, Ann-Katrin Berger misplaced her pass straight to Caroline Weir and, with the goal gaping, the Scottish midfielder cooly finished from just outside of the penalty area.

Chelsea were granted a lifeline back into the game when Guro Reiten was brought down in the penalty area by Ivana Andrés.

Reiten stepped up from the spot and, with a stroke of fortune, saw her effort come back off the post but bounce in off Misa Rodríguez’s back.

Olga Carmona had a great chance to put the hosts ahead in the final ten minutes, but as the Spanish left-back burst into the penalty area, Berger was out of her goal quickly to make an important save.

In the dying minutes of the game, Kerr was put in on goal by a wonderful pass from Reiten, but just as Berger did at the other end, Misa remained big to pull off a wonderful to tip the effort over the top of the goal.

Wolfsburg overcome spirited Roma

Scorers: Pajor 24′, 53′ Jónsdóttir 40′, Lattwein 52′; Alves 42′, Haug 80′

Wolfsburg lost Jill Roord to a firs-half injury but were inspired by replacement Sveindís Jónsdóttir as the Germand side beat a spirited Roma.

Despite a bright start by Roma, Ewa Pajor would give the hosts the lead at the midway point of the first half with a diving header from the Polish forward after good work on the break by Jónsdóttir.

Jónsdóttir, on as a first-half substitute for the injured Roord, would turn goal scorer five minutes before the break, keeping her composure and finishing from close range, but Roma would strike back almost from kick-off.

A cheap defensive giveaway gifted the ball to Andressa Alves, who, thinking quickly, caught Merle Frohms off her line with a delicate finish from 35 yards out.

Wolfsburg’s quick-fire double at the start of the second period would settle the nerves though and ultimately prove too much of a challenge for the visitors to overcome.

Lena Lattwein got in on the action, reacting quickest to a loose ball in the box to head in the hosts’ third before Pajor doubled her personal tally 30 seconds later with a powerful header after a sweeping attacking move.

Roma were given hope with 15 minutes left to play as after Wolfsburg surrendered the ball too easily in their own half again, Annamaria Serturini found Sophie Haug to score her first Champions League goal for the Italian side.

PSG brush aside Vllaznia

Scorers: Diani 19′ (PEN), 36′, Bachmann 60′, Folquet 81′

The visitors dominated proceedings from the first whistle and were inches away from taking the lead after barely 60 seconds of play as Lieke Mertens saw her header bounce off the top of the crossbar.

PSG would break the deadlock 20 minutes later as Kadidiatou Diani converted from the penalty spot after Gresa Berisha was judged to have handled the ball in the box as the Vllanzia defender blocked a shot from close range.

Diani looked dangerous throughout the first period and doubled the French side’s lead before half-time, rising highest at the back post to head home Mertens’ cross.

Ramona Bachmann put the game to bed on the hour mark, taking one touch before firing into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area to score PSG’s third.

The game would be put well beyond doubt in the final ten minutes as, off the bench, Magnaba Folquet cut inside to curl home a wonderful finish.
