Real Madrid made to sweat at home

Scorers: Zornoza 4′, Gálvez 44′; Rogic Karlsson 26′

Las Blancas hit the ground running but were forced to play out a nervy contest against Vålerenga.

The opener arrived in the blink of an eye when Claudia Zornoza poked home into an empty net after goalkeeper Jalen Justine Tompkins initially parried the ball away.

Yet the visitors suggested they wouldn’t be brushed aside when Felicia Anna Rogic Karlsson’s half-volley got past Misa to level the score.

Madrid eventually regained the lead just before the break as Rocío Gálvez’s header from a cross found the back post.

And as another 45 minutes of action led to no goals, the hosts will be happy to have survived the scare and head to Norway with a slight advantage.

Vålerenga’s compact defence, however, will be something the Norwegian side hopes to replicate as it proved to limit the Spanish club’s attack heavily.

Leuchter nets rapid hat-trick in Ajax rout

Scorers: Sabajo 9′, Grant 34′, Leuchter 47′, 56′, 60′, Tolhoek 89′

Ajax will return to Amsterdam with a comfortable lead over Zürich thanks to a dominant performance in their UWCL first leg.

The Dutch opened the scoring when a floating Quinty Sabajo volleyed home before Chasity Grant’s low drive doubled things by the half hour mark.

Unfortunately for Zürich, things got worse after the break (if it wasn’t already one-way traffic in Switzerland) when Romée Leuchter hit incredible scoring form.

Her first goal was a curling effort from outside the box (which hit off the far right post and in) before she rolled home a loose ball for a brace.

The 22-year-old’s 13-minute hat-trick was then secured with an inch-perfect free-kick from well outside the box.

Substitute Danique Tolhoek later added a late sixth for Ajax with her first goal for the club.

It will now be a mountain to climb for the Swiss club in their second-leg away.
