Four fixtures took place in the group stage of the Uefa Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.
Here’s what happened.
Scorers: Oshoala 10′, 16′, León 45’+2, Rolfö 47′, Torrejón 50′, Paredes 69′
Barcelona ended the group stage with a convincing victory over RosengĂĄrd.
The hosts were rampant from the first minute and took an early lead as Asisat Oshoala reacted quickest to tap in from close range after Aitana Bonmati’s fierce effort was tipped onto the crossbar.
Oshoala doubled Barcelona’s lead, and her personal tally, five minutes later after ghosting in at the back post to plant a free header into the back of the net from Mariona Caldentey’s cross.
Barça put the game beyond doubt on the stroke of half-time with a Mapi León free-kick on the edge of the area. The 27-year-old fired her left-footed effort around the goal with an effort that, despite going on the goalkeeper’s side, had too much power for Angel Mukasa.
Fridolina Rolfö added a fourth almost immediately after the restart with a stunning effort from a tight angle before Marta Torrejón pounced to make it five just a couple of minutes later.
Rosengård’s woes got worse just after the hour mark as Irene Paredes got in on the act, finding space in a crowded penalty area to plant home Salma Paralluelo’s corner as Barcelona won 6-0 and topped their group.
Scorers: Bühl 51′, 75′
Bayern Munich progressed behind Barcelona on goal difference despite beating Benfica in their final group match.
The best chance of the opening period fell for the hosts as Sydney Lohmann found a yard of space in the penalty area before thundering a left-footed strike that rocked the upright.
It wasn’t until after the break, though, that Bayern Munich would find the breakthrough as Klara Bühl made no mistake in front of the goal, having been found by a wonderful long pass from the back by Georgia Stanway.
Bayern doubled their lead with a quarter of an hour left in the game, and it was the same combination again. Stanway found BĂĽhl and, with more to do this time, powered past the Benfica defence before rifling a shot into the bottom corner.
This result saw the Bavarian’s finish their group on 15 points, equal with Barcelona in first, but had settle for second place due to goal difference.
Scorers: Humm 63′; Maanum 18′, 32′, 51′, Foord 23′, 68′, Blakstenius 45+1′, 54′, Little 71′ (PEN), Iwabuchi 83′
Arsenal hit nine against Zurich to confirm their place at the top of Group C.
The visitors took the lead at the midway point of the first half through the in-form Leonhardsen Maanum as the 22-year-old expertly placed a free-kick into the top scorer to score her third goal of the group stage.
Arsenal doubled their advantage less than five minutes later as Caitlin Foord tapped in Stina Blakstenius’ low cross before Maanum, who had struck the crossbar with another set-piece effort moments beforehand, then made it three.
Maanum, who was a constant threat down the Arsenal left flank throughout the half, unselfishly set up Blakstenius on the stroke of half-time to put the visitors out of sight before completing her hat-trick on the other side of half-time.
The 23-year-old Norweigan forward moved the ball out of her feet before unleashing a devastating strike into the top corner from well outside the area and, despite being a contender for goal of the match, was outdone by Blakstenius’s curling effort moments later.
An unfortunate slip by midfielder Leah Williamson gifted Zürich a chance at a consolation goal which, from the penalty spot, Fabienne Humm dispatched perfectly into the top corner and above the hands of Manuela Zinsberger.
Arsenal hit back moments later as Foord scored her second of the game before second-half substitutes Kim Little, from the spot, and Mana Iwabuchi added gloss to the final result.
Lyon progressed as runners-up in Group C after a lacklustre 0-0 draw at home to Juventus, which saw the Italian side eliminated.
The French side entered the match safe in the knowledge that as long as they avoided defeat to Juventus, their opponents on the day couldn’t leapfrog them in the standings.
Juventus started the game in a positive manner but were unable to seriously trouble Christiane Endler in the Lyon goal as Barbara Bonansea’s effort was comfortably saved at the midway point of the first period.
As the game developed, Lyon started to gain the upper hand but were wasteful in their chances to convert their advantage into goals.
In the end, the game ended goalless as Lyon progressed alongside Arsenal as Juventus’ European campaign came to and end.
