The first ever Women’s Champions League group stage matchday is behind us.

But what from the eight games across Tuesday and Wednesday caught our attention?

OneFootball Videos

Biggest Statement

Reigning champions Barcelona picked up where they left off last season with a dominant win over a side from London.

Barça were superb against Arsenal, keeping the WSL leaders at arm’s length throughout their 4-1 win. There is no doubt who the side to beat are.

Goal of the Week

What a strike from Katharina Naschenweng as Hoffenheim beat HB KĂžge 5-0 on Tuesday.

Best Comeback

After 625 days, Ada Hegerberg returned to competitive action for Lyon. It’s been a long wait for the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner and it was a delight to see her step back on a football pitch.

Best Rondo

We talked about Barcelona keeping Arsenal at arm’s length and just, wow.

Straight out of La Masia’s playbook.

Best Underdog

Only formed in 2017, Benfica had just 31% of the possession but held Bayern Munich to a 0-0 draw in their Champions League debut on Tuesday.

Women’s football was a long way behind in Portugal but has made a lot of progress in recent years and this result was a great marker for the changes that are coming.

The Award for Best Rollercoaster

Chelsea must have thought they were in big trouble, 3-1 down at home in their opener against Wolfsburg. In a group also containing Juventus, a home defeat is no way to begin.

But Emma Hayes’ side rallied and snatched an injury time equaliser through Pernille Harder.

Speaking of this one, Sam Kerr’s delicately chipped finish is well worth another look. And then another.

The Continuing Tradition Award

The name Real Madrid is more closely associated with the term ‘Champions League’ than any other club in the world.

Well, the women’s team made their debut in the competition this week and won, beating Kharkiv 1-0 in their group stage opener.
