The draw for this season’s group stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) has taken place, and it’s produced some mouthwatering ties.

Incredibly, five of last season’s eight quarter-finalists have failed to make the group stage this time around.

This season marks the final tournament in which the teams will be split into four groups of four. As of next season, the competition will revert to the League Stage format which has been adopted by the men’s tournament. It will also expand to 18 teams.

But, that’s for the future. For now, let’s look at the 16 teams who will be hoping to be in May’s showpiece final in Lisbon.

UWCL group stage draw

Group A

Lyon, Wolfsburg, Roma, Galatasaray

Group A sees the most successful team in the competition’s history, eight-time winners Lyon, take on two-time champions VfL Wolfsburg.

Italian champions Roma complete the group alongside debutants Galatasaray, who won their first ever Turkish Women’s Super League title last season.

Group B

Chelsea, Real Madrid, FC Twente, Celtic

Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea have been drawn into Group B as they go in search of their first ever European crown. As with last season, they’ll take on Real Madrid in the group stages. They’re joined by Dutch champions FC Twente and Scottish powerhouses Celtic, who have qualified for the group stage for the first time in their history.

The SWPL champions have also announced their intention to stage one of their three home games at Celtic Park.

Group C

Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Juventus, Vålerenga

Group C presents a challenging task for Arsenal. Alongside German powerhouses Bayern Munich, Jonas Eidevall’s side will have to navigate a Juventus side who knocked Paris Saint-Germain out of the play-offs this week.

Norwegian side Vålerenga are sure to provide a warm Scandinavian welcome to their Group C counterparts.

Group D

Barcelona, Man City, SKN St Pölten, Hammarby

Title holders Barcelona will be looking to win their third successive Champions League crown this season.

Manchester City have been knocked out of this tournament by Spanish opposition in each of the past five seasons. Gareth Taylor’s WSL runners-up will be looking to change that this year.

SKN St Pölten have swept all before them domestically in Austria, but that dominance hasn’t translated to the European stage. They picked up just a solitary point last season and before that, had failed to win a single tie in the old knockout format.

Hammarby’s reward for knocking out Benfica in the play-offs are some eye-catching matches against Barça and City. They may well fancy their chances of taking points from St Pölten in an otherwise tough Group D.

All Champions League action gets underway on the October 8th and 9th.
