For the first match of the CONCACAF W Championship, the USWNT faced off against Haiti in Monterrey, Mexico. They won 3-0 with a brace from Alex Morgan and an underwhelming performance.
Head coach Vlatko Andonovski put out a similar lineup from his previous matches. He elected to start Casey Murphy in goal and Morgan up top instead of the usual Alyssa Naeher and Ashley Hatch.
The first goal of the game came in the 16th minute from Morgan. Mallory Pugh sent a cross in the box where Morgan had a brilliant flick past the goalkeeper making the score, 1-0.
The next goal came seven minutes later scored by Morgan once again. Kelley O’Hara sent the ball perfectly into the box toward Morgan’s head where she headed it over the keeper.
After a defensive error from the USWNT, Murphy came up with a big 1v1 save to keep Haiti off the board. Minutes later, Haiti was awarded a penalty but it rocketed off the post.
For the final goal of the match, Kristie Mewis sent the ball into the box where it was headed down to Midge Purces’ feet. She slotted the ball right past the outstretched arms of the keeper to make the final score, 3-0.
The USWNT resumes play on July 7 against Jamaica. Jamaica recently took down tournament hosts Mexico so it should be a competitive matchup between the teams.
