That 2-1 loss in Fort Lauderdale ended the Stars and Stripes’ 71-game home unbeaten streak, and it looked like the Germans might repeat the trick when they took the lead in the 18th minute at the Red Bull Arena.

A cross from the right flank found Sophia Kleinherne unmarked and her effort was blocked by Becky Sauerbrunn only for the ball to fall perfectly to midfielder Jule Brand to sweep home from close range.

The visitors held that lead until early in the second half when Sophia Smith barrelled her way into the area before unleashing a shot past Ann-Katrin Berger in goal.

It was yet another highlight in an incredible year for the 22-year-old attacker, who was a key member of the Portland Thorns side who claimed the NWSL title last month.

And it spurred the hosts on to take the lead just two minutes later. A hopeful ball over the top by Andi Sullivan wasn’t dealt with by a hesitant German defence, allowing Mallory Pugh to nip in slot past the advancing Berger.

The Americans would hold on to see out the victory, on a night that also marked Alex Morgan’s magnificent achievement of reaching 200 caps for her country.
