🌎 USMNT defeat Mexico 2-0 to go atop Concacaf Octagonal
Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie scored late goals to give the USMNT a 2-0 win over Mexico and the top spot in Concacaf World Cup qualifying.
Scorers: Pulisic 74′, McKennie 85′
If there was any doubt about the United States and their recent dominance over Mexico, it was silenced on Friday night as the USMNT scored their third straight victory over their arch-rivals.
As usual, it was a tightly-contested back-and-forth affair, with Zack Steffen making the early play of the match with a fantastic save on Chucky Lozano after Mexico did incredibly well to put him through on goal.
Tempers would flare just after the hour-mark as Chaka Rodríguez got away with gouging the eyes of Brenden Aaronson, with no VAR available to check what would have surely been a straight red card.
Pulisic would immediately come on for Aaronson and wasted no time making his impact, thumping home a perfect header from a Timothy Weah cross to give the USMNT a deserved lead.
Five minutes from time, the United States would go up ‘dos a cero’ after a fortuitous bounce allowed Weston McKennie to go through on goal and beat Memo Ochoa.
The USMNT will be without both McKennie (yellow card accumulation) and Miles Robinson (late second yellow) for their match in Jamaica on Tuesday.
Mexico will look to rebound when they face Canada in Edmonton.
