The USA Women’s National Team reached the Concacaf W Championship in relative comfort after they saw off the challenge of Costa Rica on Thursday.
Scorers: Sonnett 34′, Pugh 45′, Sanchez 90+5′
The USA had a host of chances early on at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey but it took until the 34th minute for Emily Sonnett to break the deadlock.
Left-back Sonnett was on hand to bundle the ball home after Costa Rica failed to clear a corner, notching her first goal at international level in the process.
And the Stars and Stripes doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Mallory Pugh slotted home after a clever back heel from Rose Lavelle put the Chicago Red Stars attacker clean through.
The Yanks continued to dominate after the break, but had less incentive to go for the jugular in the oppressive heat that had a real feel of 40C (105F) at times.
Vlatko Andonovski’s charges did manage a third at the death when Ashley Sanchez rifled home from inside the area.
The USA advance to Monday’s decider where they will meet the winner of the other semi-final between Canada and Jamaica.
