USA national team boss critical of Bryan Reynold’s decision to join Roma
Two weeks after finalising another loan, Roma right back Bryan Reynolds has drawn criticism from United States national team boss Gregg Berhalter.
Appearing on the Gab & Juls Podcast, the 48 year-old was asked about the perceived lack of quality in MLS and whether players from America benefit more by leaving the country in order to play in abroad.
“It’s a simple answer, you have to keep moving to the next level once you’re no longer being challenged,” he said.
“If you keep doing that you’re going to be okay—the issue becomes when you’re still being challenged at the level you’re at but you still decide to move on to the next one, that’s when there’s going to be problems.”
“I think it’s important to note some of these recent transfers from MLS were made way too early. I think about Bryan Reynolds, for example. He goes to Roma and look at what’s happened to his development.”
Since joining the Giallorossi in January 2021 from Dallas FC, Reynolds has featured in only eight games despite costing the club a transfer fee of over €7 million.
The right back barely featured in the first half of last season under Jose Mourinho and ultimately decided to join Belgian side KV Kortrijk in January on a six-month loan deal.
Following the end of the season, Roma agreed to send Reynolds on another loan deal for the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign.
Two weeks ago the capital club announced the defender joined Belgian outfit KVC Westerlo, who will also have the chance to make the loan permanent for a rumored €7 million.
